Can You Train a Maine Coon?

Yes — and Maine Coons are genuinely one of the most trainable cat breeds. Their combination of intelligence, curiosity, and people-orientation makes them unusually responsive to positive reinforcement, and many Maine Coon owners are surprised by just how much their cat is capable of learning.

The most effective approach is clicker training paired with high-value treats. The clicker marks the exact moment your cat does something right, which helps them understand precisely what they are being rewarded for. Keep sessions short — five to ten minutes at a time — and always end on a success. Maine Coons are smart enough to get bored or frustrated if a session drags on, and a good experience keeps them eager to engage next time.

Basic commands like sit, stay, come, and down are a natural starting point and genuinely useful for day-to-day life with your cat. From there, target training — teaching your cat to touch a specific object with their nose or paw — opens the door to more complex behaviors, since almost any trick can be built on that foundation. Many Maine Coons can be taught to spin, give a high five, jump through a hoop, and even navigate basic agility obstacles with enough patience and practice.

Leash walking is one of the most popular activities for the breed, and Maine Coons take to it more readily than most cats. The key is introducing the harness slowly — letting your cat wear it indoors and associate it with positive things before ever attaching a leash. At The Queen's Maine Coon, every kitten leaves home with a custom harness already sized and fitted for them, so the process of getting comfortable with it can start right away.

Fetch is another behavior that comes naturally to many Maine Coons. Unlike most cats, they will genuinely retrieve a toy and bring it back, sometimes indefinitely. If your Maine Coon shows this tendency early, encourage it — it is a wonderful outlet for their energy and a great way to bond.

Training can also be used to redirect unwanted behaviors like furniture scratching or counter surfing. Rather than punishing the behavior, the goal is to make the right choice more appealing than the wrong one — providing a better scratching surface, rewarding use of it, and making the off-limits areas less accessible or interesting. This approach works with the cat's intelligence rather than against it.

At The Queen's Maine Coon, we give every kitten a head start by introducing puzzle feeders and enrichment toys from a young age. By the time your kitten arrives home, they are already used to working for rewards and engaging actively with their environment — which makes the transition into formal training much smoother for both of you.
